阿拉伯人在历史上对天文学和数学的发展做出了巨大的贡献，许多借自阿拉伯语的天文学和数学术语至今仍在使用，zenith便是其中之一。它源自阿拉伯语samt arras (头顶上的道路)中的samt(道路)。可是samt是怎么演化成zenith的呢？
中世纪的西班牙曾是伊斯兰教文化和基督教文化密切接触的地方，当samt传入西班牙语时，很可能文牍误将samt中的m写成了ni，致使samt变成了zenit，后来在法语中写作cenith。十四世纪进入英语后，才最后演变成zenith，词义也随之发生了变化，由“头顶”到“天顶”，进而引申为“顶峰、顶点”。

法语的zeste，指加在饮料里使其具有独特香味的“柠檬皮”或“柑橘皮”，在法语中此意一直沿用至今。十七至十八世纪间，该词传入英国，便有了“可增添风味之物”等意，进而引申指“风味”“风趣”“热情”等。
